Reducing our environmental impact
We work daily to improve our industrial practices with a suite of measures in place to limit our impact on the environment. A number of actions makes us the first distillery in Martinique to be ISO 14001 certified:
The reduction of the environmental impact of our production processes is achieved through several actions:
Reasonable water and energy consumption : We have reduced our water consumption by half in 10 years, thanks to the recovery of rainwater and the recycling of cooling water. Our distillery also uses photovoltaic panels.
Re-using by-products : Bagasse, the fibrous residue of sugar cane, is used as fuel to power our steam engine. Each year, 6,000 tonnes of bagasse are burned. The remaining 3500 tonnes are composted and then spread on our fields as fertiliser. Around 33,000m3 of vinasse, a by-product of the rhum distillation process, is also recycled as fertiliser each year, negating the need for chemical fertilisers.
Waste sorting and recycling : There are waste separation bins in our offices and distillery. In addition, we raise our employees’ awareness of the importance of sorting waste in our distillery.
